Madeleine Evans of Tivoli Services was elected as Plants@Work's new Chair at the end of June. We asked her a few questions so that you could get to know her better. Here are her answers:

Maddy 2

How did you get started in the industry/ or why did you choose this industry?
I started with Rentokil Tropical Plants, which later re-branded as Ambius, on the recommendation of a recruitment consultant – I had no idea the industry existed until he told me about the job and then I became more and more interested as the recruitment process went on and was delighted to get the job.

How long have you been in the industry?
16 years this month – I joined Rentokil Tropical Plants in June 2002.

What do you love about the industry?
It is very friendly and there is always something new to learn, also people are generally pleased to see us as we are enhancing their working environment.

What do you love about your job?
Going into lots of interesting buildings and meeting new people every day – basically being nosy!

And the worst part of your job
When you have to compromise on a design or concept to meet a tight budget and the whole impact of the planting is reduced.

Tell us something that most people don’t knowabout you
I’ve hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon…and back out again.

Who has been your biggest inspiration/ inspired you the most?

No one person springs to mind… various people at different stages of my life including hard-working family members, friends who are great mothers and creative, ambitious colleagues.

What is your proudest achievement?

Being elected as the first female to chair the Plants at Work committee of course.

What’s your biggest passion?
My 3 children, closely followed by a good mojito.

What’s your pet hate?
It’s a long list: people sniffing on the train, people walking slowly in front of me, bad manners, incorrect use of apostrophes, bad mojitos,

Name your ideal dinner guests
Oscar Wilde, Barack Obama, Caitlin Moran, Victoria Wood, Stephen Fry, David Attenborough, Marilyn Monroe, Judi Dench and my husband Ian.

Your favourite way to relax/spend your spare time
Working my way down a cocktail menu or at the theatre.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Food. I’m constantly snacking or planning the next meal…

What’s on your wish list?
More holidays, more cocktails, early retirement.
