Best Project 2022: The Atrium, Sheffield Hallam University by Urban Planters South Yorkshire
The Atrium, Sheffield Hallam University by Urban Planters South Yorkshire
As you know, we are celebrating 20 years of Awards by showcasing the top project each year. In 2022, this accolade went to Urban Planters South Yorkshire who were briefed to create a biophilic learning and collaboration space, where natural materials, light and planting combined to create an inspiring space for students and staff.
Work began on the planting concept for the Atrium space 2 – 3 years before the installation started when we were approached by the University to help develop a Biophilic learning & collaboration space. The design of the space changed several times over the course of this period, and so we were able to explore many different options and ideas.
Ultimately the planting element moved towards a wall mounted ‘space’ surround of greenery, with a series of large integrated planters suspended over the open space and inbuilt into the café area & beneath a staircase.
We worked closely with the developers (BAM) and the architects (BDP) to ensure we had accurate weight calculations so structurally the planting could become integrated into the walls. We then designed GRP liners to fit snuggly within the cavities, spreading and distributing the weight across each of the spaces.
Access to change the planting is limited and will require specialized access equipment, so it was absolutely critical we used the correct planting species for the light & temperature to ensure minimal failure. We carefully studied the space so that we were able to pick not only the right plants for the space environmentally but also to create the right mix and balance of foliage, to capture the aesthetic which was so important to this project. The plants need to look lush and tropical, with a variety of leaf shape and sizes.
The Atrium also maximizes the use of light and natural materials to complete the biophilic effect within this beautiful space.
