Interview with the Plantman_about_Town

on Tuesday, 05 October 2021. Posted in News

Following his success at this year's Chelsea Flower Show, we wondered what's next for plantman_about_town aka Ian Drummond.

1 -TELL US HOW YOUR CHELSEA EXHIBIT CAME ABOUT AND WHAT WAS YOUR THINKING BEHIND YOUR DESIGN?

So it was collaboration between myself and Malvern Garden Buildings we were introduced to one another by the show manager at the Chelsea flower show as she thought we would be a good fit and would create something special for the first dedicated House plant area.

The Green Room

This was back in 2019 but due to Covid the show kept being moved back so we ended up working on two virtual Chelseas together in 2020 and in May this year.

This year was my 10th year of bringing house plants into the Chelsea Flower Show so I really wanted to do something that was different and fun so in a brain storming meeting we came up with the Green Room – a VIP hangout for the show’s “planterati”, a room filled with many of my favourite plants that I have used previously at celebrity events with the building “suspended” in a giant neon pink macramé hanger.

It was a conceptual design that explored the relationship between plants and people and showed us that plants are for everyone and that you should have fun with them.

2- WHAT WERE YOUR FAVOURITE PLANTS YOU USED AT CHELSEA THIS YEAR?

Top of the list for me this year is the African violet I really wanted to put them centre stage as they were my mum’s favourite houseplant so having them there was a tribute to my mum who always supported me in my career.

I would then say Vanda Orchid as they have become my signature plant after using them on some amazing events from Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball to London Fashion Week.

And I should also mention the Medinilla so flamboyant and camp, I had to use them.

3-YOU HAD GREAT PR AND MEDIA PICK UP THIS YEAR AND BIG CELEBRITY INTEREST -WHAT WERE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS ?

I really wanted to make a statement this year at Chelsea my 10th year there and the first year of an area just for house plants. Like many of us I have had a tough couple of years so wanted to have fun and enjoy it and hopefully make people smile, bringing Disco and Drag to the show hopefully showed that houseplants are for everyone and you can have fun with them.

So seeing people smile as they looked at the exhibit was the highlight but yes we had an amazing response from the media this year so I am really pleased with the interest.

Meeting Sir Paul Smith (my Idol) and gaining his sign of approval was very exciting, Crystal our Drag Queen DJ who opened the show for us was amazing and so much fun I am really pleased I contacted her and she said yes. And then ‘The GC’, Gemma Collins we chatted for ages and she was just adorable and who knew she loved plants so much!

4-IT’S BEEN QUITE A YEAR FOR YOU! WHAT ARE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS?

Yes 2021 has been a busy year, selling Indoor Garden Design to Nurture was a huge step, being recognised in the Hort Week list of most influential in the House Plant and Interior Landscaping industry was amazing, my recent plants@work award for Oustanding Contribution to the industry was really special and just some amazing projects that I have worked on from the community projects in my local area to Chelsea fringe, virtual Chelsea and of course winning Gold at Chelsea.

5 – WHATS NEXT FOR YOU?

Taking a break!! Well for a few days anyway! But then under my Plantman_about_town brand working on fun creative projects and offering creative consultancy services so very much still staying in the industry and continuing to push boundaries and the freedom to do so - the only limitation is imagination.

I am just finalising some changes to my book At Home with Plants that is being re published in the UK and USA in April next year and developing ideas for my next book!

Having more time to support the foundation I set up in 2019 with my sister in memory of my mum, The Peggy Drummond Foundation supporting local charities.

6- ANYONE THAT FOLLOWS YOU ON SOCIAL WOULD HAVE SPOTTED YOUR BEAUTIFUL DOG THAT’S ALWAYS WITH YOU – TELL US ABOUT HIM?

Ian wiith Hamish

Ian with Hamish!

Hamish my 2 year old Cavapoo, I just love him he kept me and my partner Allan going through lockdown, he was always by our side to make us smile. And he is very much looking forward to his new job as the Barketing manager at Plantman_about_town.
