Just a minute with David Snell of Nature at Work Ltd

on Thursday, 08 August 2019. Posted in News

How did you get started in the industry or why did you choose this industry?
My expertise is in Sales and Marketing and I spent 10 years in the IT industry, but I am also from a farming background and wanted to run my own business and be my own boss. I looked around for some time for a good business idea and I really liked the business my mate Nick Tawney of Greenscheme in Warwickshire was running. He and his wife Susie had a small Office Plant business and I was fascinated. I thought plants in offices was a great idea, so I came to an agreement with Nick to learn the ropes with him. I initially set up Green Scheme South and we shared a website for a while until I was big enough to survive on my own. For the first three years I was also working 3 days a week doing Business Development for another company in another industry but as soon as my business got big enough I decided it could support me and I went full time.

How long have you been in the industry?
About 15 years.

What do you love about the industry?
I love it’s uniqueness. Most people don’t even know an industry like ours exists, which is kinda fun. I also find the people in our industry very genuine, down to earth and generally very happy to help.

What do you love about your job?
I love meeting people and transforming their offices for them. I used to run a marquee hire business, and it was so satisfying being involved in a successful, happy event (a wedding or private party for example). With plants in offices, you get a similar vibe. Plants really do transform the look and feel of an office and it’s a great feeling to be responsible for delivering that feeling of wellbeing in an office.

And the worst part of your job
Probably when a client cancels! Particularly when we have to lug heavy displays out of their office!

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you
I can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue!

Who has been your biggest inspiration/ inspired you the most?
Probably my Dad, actually. He was a great ideas man – not afraid to ‘speculate to accumulate’. But a hero of mine since the early years is Richard Branson.

What is your proudest achievement?
From a business point of view, it was probably setting up my business from scratch and building it up over the last 15 years to a decent size (we have over 200 customers now). From a private point of view, I am very proud of my wife and family.

What’s your biggest passion?
Running a reasonably successful business. I also love walking with my wife, Jackie.

What’s your pet hate?
I don’t like people that waffle and procrastinate.

Name your ideal dinner guests
Victoria Wood, Dame Judi Dench, Gerry Rafferty, Sir David Attenborough, Giles Coren, Richard Branson

Your favourite way to relax/spend your spare time
Spending time with family and friends. Cycling, tennis, walking in beautiful countryside

What is your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate and a nice glass of good Cognac

What’s on your wish list?
Go walking/trekking in South America with my wife (we are currently half way through walking the Pyrenees)
