The Best of the Best
The selection for this year’s Favourite Office Plant has changed a little as we asked our judges to look at the winning plants over the last 10 years and choose their favourite from these previous winners.
Over the years we have looked at various criteria for plants to qualify as the favourite. This year with such a wide range of plants, the criteria can be summed up as ‘all winners in their own right’ with some achieving more reasons than others. So it was a tight run result with some good reasons for choices too.
Drum roll please for the winner
The plant that received the most votes this year was the Monstera aka the Cheese plant.
Matt Appleby, editor of Horticulture Week chose Monstera as his top choice because of “its enduring popularity (that) has been perpetuated by new forms. This is the grand fromage of indoor plants.”
Jane Perone also chose Monstera as her overall winner and it garnered other votes from Vanessa Champion of Journal of Biophilic Design and podcaster who joined the panel for the first time this year.
In second place came the ever popular Spathiphyllum aka the Peace Lily voted for by Vanessa who explained that she had her first Peace Lily when she was16, “I immediately loved the serene elegance, the sophisticated beauty, like swan lake in a pot. I would rejoice and ruminate as I watched the graceful gentle movement of the dark-green sail-like leaves.’
Rona Wheeldon and Claudia de Yong also voted for the Peace Lily; Claudia explained, ‘(It’s) a great low maintenance choice, a wonderful plant for removing toxins from the air and is almost impossible to kill!’
Claiming a respectable third place was the Philodendron voted for by Michael Perry aka Mr Plant Geek who explained his choice was due to the facts that “It's durable and easy going, yet very attractive to look at. The perfect office plant!”
“The indoor plant that has risen most in popularity over the decade, from being a specialist item to a mainstay in the office or home,” was Matt Appleby’s reason for giving his vote to the Philodendron.
In general
Plants have become a ‘necessity’ in the workplace not least for how they look but for all the additional benefits they add.
• Even one plant can improve our mood and reduce stress levels – imagine what several can do
• Plants raise our general wellbeing by almost 50%
• Plants can reduce the occurrence of headaches and tiredness
• Plants can stimulate and improve our performance and concentration
• Plants have a positive effect on our creativity
• Plants lessen noise around us by deflecting and diffracting sound
