Gold Leaf Award: BCG Canary Wharf by Nurture Landscaping Ltd
Continuing the Gold Leaf Award winners in this year's Awards, we take a look at Nurture Landscapes Ltd scheme installed at
BCG Canary Wharf
in the Design & Installation over £30K category
"We had a quick turnaround to design a bespoke planting scheme from receiving the client’s design brief in mid April 2023 to the go-live date 3 July 2023."
The new office design is a beautiful, premium space which required thoughtful choices of plants to complement the design. With the time constraints and access for onsite lining required careful logistics; plus the space has very varied lighting and different feels to each of the areas which needed to be reflected in the planting but also work cohesively as an overall look. Working closely with their Senior Services manager, we worked through various challenges and produced a proposal which once installed was very well received.
The new office design incorporated areas with very varied light conditions and joinery pieces with voids of varied shapes and sizes intended for planting. The main reception area is very internal within the building and uses the client’s brand colour of dark teal, the design incorporated two large corner beds and a scheme was needed to work with the lower light levels.
The client was looking for a lush impactful planting scheme which worked with the colours to give a full, rich, luxurious feel. In contrast the client event space and large break out area which looks out onto a terrace is surrounded by full length glass windows/doors and has fantastic natural light.
Again, the design incorporated joinery pieces for planting, consisting of two kidney shaped beds with seating where the client wanted a more relaxed feel. Also included were 3 large columns in the space which had integrated troughs at approx 2.5m high which were intended for planting to spill over and give a really lush look at a high level.
The client had a relatively limited budget but needed a luxurious, high end appearance with an element of fun to fit with their stunning new office design.
The client was keen to use live plants throughout the scheme; this was going to be a challenge as access for the maintenance on the high-level shelving in one of the tea points and on the columns needed to be considered. After much deliberation artificial plants were opted for the shelving, with the columns being so integral to the look and feel of the large event space these were kept live, planted using hydroculture to allow for fewer watering visits.
Leaf shapes and colours were considered, the client was looking for a full rich look working with their brand colours. Philodendron congo and the smaller Calathea for the banquette areas added a splash of red that worked well.
The event space has a much lighter, brighter look and some planting using Chlorophytum and lime greens of Asplenium were included here with a splash of the red leaf planting to bring it all together.
Tabletop decorative bowls were chosen for their natural materials and to give a more fun/interesting look with the asparagus fern/succulent mix.
Lining of the irregular shaped voids needed to be carried out on site, there was not sufficient time to have moulds made for these spaces.
The client was very pleased with the end result and it looked better than he had hoped for. He is hoping to get more budget approved next year for some floor standing plants around the office.
