Gold Leaf Award: The Living Surface .Co - Busy Bees Lichfield
The Living Surface Co's award submission showcases the installation of an exterior living wall and living pictures for Busy Bees. Six different plant species were selected, totalling 330 overall, ensuring that they were safe for children and suitable for the west-facing facade.
The living wall provides numerous benefits including improved air quality, mental health benefits, and a connection to nature. It covers a brick wall 2,080 mm wide x 4,800 mm high. The client requested a mixture of vibrant colours and scents if possible. The use of an automatic irrigation system with sms alerts and plant selection techniques ensure the living wall thrives. This project demonstrates the importance of adding green spaces and highlights the positive impact they can have on health and well-being.
As this was going onto a childcare nursery, the Living Surface Co were mindful to use suitable plant species. In order to help with their planning application they provided a document detailing the initially proposed two external living walls to accompany the application including a 3D wall render explaining the construction, planting and maintenance required.
The client is extremely happy with the design and installation of our living wall. It came at a time when our client was celebrating their 40-year anniversary and helped them demonstrate their commitment to improving the environment.
One month after installation The Living Surface Co returned to carry out their 1st maintenance visit and were pleased to see numerous bees and a dragonfly taking up residence in the wall.
