Thriving Amidst Adversity: Interior Landscaping’s Role in Wartime Ukraine
As we approach February 24, 2025, the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we reflect on how the war has impacted every aspect of life—including the interior landscaping industry. Despite the devastation and uncertainty, Ukrainian designers and landscapers have shown remarkable resilience, continuing their work to bring comfort and a sense of normalcy to people’s lives through plants.

In a poignant LinkedIn post, Iryna Pakhomova shares her perspective and the video recorded in Ukraine:
“During my career, there have been moments when I realized that my three degrees in economics held little value. The start of the war in Ukraine was one of those times.
In a crisis like war, all the rules of economics simply fall apart, and you become only as strong as you are good in behavioural psychology.”
To preserve and share their hard-earned knowledge, First Floral Company has recorded documentary videos and interviews. One of the most insightful conversations features COO Viktoria Morhun and CEO Julia Varina, who discuss the extraordinary challenges they’ve faced and the lessons they’ve learned in keeping a business running during wartime.

Lessons from Three Years of War
Over the past three years, First Floral Company has had to adapt in ways they never imagined. In the video, they share invaluable insights on how to:
- Manage teams under immense pressure
- Reshape customer relationships and portfolios for resilience
- Master financial agility during extreme uncertainty
- Borrow survival strategies from unexpected industries—like mining
- Make difficult decisions, including foregoing force majeure protections to keep the business afloat

Speaking at TPIE 2025
For those who want to hear firsthand what it takes to keep selling plants when rockets are flying, Iryna Pakhomova will be speaking at TPIE on January 23, 2025. Her session will delve into the reality of running a business under war conditions and the incredible adaptability of Ukraine’s interior landscaping industry.
Astonishing Resilience
Kenneth Freeman, Chairman of plants@work, commented on the video:
"This is astonishing—please watch the video. It is amazing how people adapt and cope with horrendous situations and still keep going.
Putting plants in buildings might seem a trivial activity when bombs are falling around you, but it brings a sense of some normality and humanity to a very abnormal situation.
Keep going—I am certain your customers and their staff appreciate what First Floral Company is doing."
