Industry Outlook: The Future of Interior Landscaping
As Plants@Work celebrates 25 years of representing the interior landscaping industry, Chairman Kenneth Freeman believes the sector is well placed for continued growth—but only if it continues to evolve with changing market demands.

The industry remains in a strong position, with sustained demand across the commercial office sector and a healthy pipeline of major projects. However, the changing nature of the workplace means the industry cannot afford to stand still. Shifting workplace trends, hybrid working and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on office occupancy all have the potential to reshape future demand.
Rather than relying solely on traditional office installations, the industry is increasingly broadening its focus into sectors where wellbeing and biophilic design are becoming essential. Healthcare presents significant opportunities, with projects such as the roof garden at King's College Hospital demonstrating the value of integrating nature into patient environments. Universities and student accommodation are also embracing interior planting as awareness grows of its positive impact on learning, wellbeing and quality of life. Meanwhile, the hospitality sector is emerging as another promising market, where planting is helping create memorable guest experiences and healthier indoor environments.
Kenneth believes that education and professional development will be critical to supporting this next phase of growth. As horticultural practices evolve and client expectations become more sophisticated, plants@work is placing greater emphasis on industry-wide training and knowledge sharing. The aim is not only to promote the benefits of interior landscaping but also to provide members with practical expertise that clearly differentiates them within the marketplace.
International collaboration is becoming an increasingly important part of this strategy. With many projects now commissioned by global facilities management companies, plants@work is strengthening relationships with industry organisations worldwide. A key example is the redevelopment of The Guide for Interior Landscape Specifiers, which is being transformed into an international online resource through collaboration with experts from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and India.
Research also remains central to the industry's future. Ongoing projects, including the Repair study in Swansea and RHS-funded research at the University of Birmingham, continue to strengthen the evidence demonstrating the positive impact of interior planting on health, wellbeing and the built environment.
Alongside technical excellence, Kenneth believes the industry must continue to demonstrate leadership in sustainability and social responsibility. plants@work is encouraging members to embrace high standards in environmental practice while also promoting equity, diversity and inclusion. Initiatives such as the plants@work Pride Network reflect the association's commitment to supporting a modern, inclusive industry that aligns with the values of today's clients.

Looking ahead, Kenneth sees adaptability as the defining characteristic of the interior landscaping sector. Over the past 25 years the industry has continually responded to changing technologies, evolving workplaces and new customer expectations. By investing in education, embracing research, strengthening international partnerships and championing sustainable, ethical practices, plants@work believes the sector is well positioned to continue raising the profile of interior landscaping and demonstrating the vital role plants play in creating healthier, happier places to live and work.
