Father’s Day: Expert Plant Picks

on Monday, 15 June 2026. Posted in Latest News

Ian Drummond, of Ian Drummond Botanicals and a plants@work Ambassador, highlights a significant shift in recent years: a surge in men purchasing and collecting houseplants across the UK and globally. Men now represent a rapidly growing demographic of indoor ‘plant parents,’ a trend largely driven by an increasing interest in home design and the pursuit of improved mental health and wellbeing.

As a thoughtful, long-lasting alternative to traditional Father’s Day gifts, houseplants offer many benefits. According to Ian Drummond, the ideal choice depends on the recipient's experience level, personal style, and the time they wish to dedicate to plant care. Below are his top houseplants for Father’s Day, categorised by the recipient's plant-parent style.

For the Low-Maintenance or Beginner Plant Dad

These robust, forgiving varieties are perfect for busy fathers or those who are completely new to indoor gardening.

Sansevieria Trifasciata (Snake Plant):  This architectural marvel features stiff, upright, sword-like green leaves with striking yellow margins. It is incredibly hardy and tolerates significant neglect.

Light: Thrives in anything from bright, indirect light to low, dark corners.

Watering: Extremely drought-tolerant; water thoroughly only once every 2 to 4 weeks, after the soil has completely dried out.

Soil: Requires a sharp, loose, well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix.

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia (ZZ Plant): This tropical plant features sleek, glossy, deep green leaflets arranged along thick, upright stems. Its unique, highly polished leaves provide a clean, modern aesthetic.

Light: Highly adaptable; thrives in medium to low indirect light but should be kept away from intense direct sun.

Watering: Allow the potting medium to dry out entirely between waterings; it stores water efficiently in its rhizomes.

Soil: Use a standard indoor potting mix blended with perlite to ensure excellent drainage.

Epipremnum Aureum (Pothos/Devil’s Ivy): A fast-growing climber with heart-shaped, variegated green and gold foliage. It is an excellent choice for trailing down from shelves or a mantlepiece.

Light: Performs well in a variety of environments, from low light to bright, filtered spaces.

Watering: Water moderately only when the top few inches of soil feel completely dry.

Soil: Thrives in a versatile, well-aerated standard houseplant soil mixture.

For the Design-Conscious or Bold Plant Dad

If the recipient loves a modern interior look or wants to make an eye-catching design statement, these dramatic plants are a perfect fit.

Monstera Deliciosa (Swiss Cheese Plant):  This plant produces massive, glossy green leaves that naturally split and develop dramatic holes as they mature. It brings an instant, structural tropical jungle vibe to a room.

Light: Requires moderate to bright, indirect sunlight to help form leaf fenestrations.

Watering: Drench thoroughly once a week, ensuring excess water drains away to avoid root rot.

Soil: A chunky, well-aerating peat-free or aroid potting mix works best.

Ficus Lyrata (Fiddle-Leaf Fig): Famous for its large, heavily veined, violin-shaped upright leaves, this plant grows into a stately, tree-like structure that serves as a beautiful focal piece in a bright room.

Light: Needs consistent, bright, indirect sunlight to thrive.

Watering: Water evenly when the top 2 inches of soil are dry; avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.

Soil: Plant in a premium, fast-draining potting soil inside a container with generous drainage holes.

For the Hands-On or Experienced Plant Dad

For fathers who genuinely enjoy the process of routine maintenance, pruning, and interactive cultivation, these unique plants offer a rewarding hobby.

Ficus Ginseng Bonsai:  This beginner-friendly bonsai features a thick, bulbous exposed root system that resembles a ginseng root. It supports a compact canopy of oval-shaped dark green leaves, adding instant artistry to a desk.

Light: Prefers bright, filtered sunlight but easily adjusts to semi-shaded spots.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy; mist the leaves frequently to mimic high humidity.

Soil: Requires a dedicated bonsai soil mix composed of akadama, pumice, or fine lava rock.

Nephrolepis Exaltata (Boston Fern): This plant forms a lush mound of feather-like, bright green fronds that spill beautifully over the edges of a pot. It acts as a powerful natural air purifier but demands precise humidity management.

Light: Requires moderate, filtered light; harsh direct rays will scorch its delicate fronds.

Watering: Never allow the soil mix to fully dry out. Water regularly to keep the medium damp but well-drained.

Soil: Provide a rich, moisture-retaining, organic potting substrate that drains freely.

Whether choosing a hardy staple or a more meticulous specimen, selecting the perfect plant is a thoughtful gesture that will bring lasting life and tranquillity to your Dad's home for years to come. Whatever his personal style, gifting a bit of greenery is the perfect way to help him cultivate a healthier, more vibrant living space this Father’s Day.
