International law firm Pinsent Masons embarked on an ambitious office refresh project to elevate the biophilic design and visual cohesion of its workplaces across the UK. The initiative spanned eight UK offices, including the firm’s 10-storey London headquarters, and was delivered by phs Greenleaf, resulting in a consistent, high-quality planting scheme that has been recognised with the Gold Leaf Award for Design and Installation.
The project’s objective was clear: to “bring in the green” and create spaces that enhanced wellbeing, improved air quality, and reflected Pinsent Masons’ brand consistency. phs Greenleaf’s design team conducted a comprehensive review of all existing interior and exterior plants, ensuring each specimen was thriving in its environment and introducing new species as offices were refurbished or relocated.
A major challenge lay in maintaining a uniform aesthetic across multiple locations, from London and Manchester to Edinburgh, Belfast, Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham, Aberdeen, and Dublin. Each office required a bespoke plan, with plant selection carefully tailored to its specific light, temperature, and environmental conditions. Every element—from reception areas to meeting rooms and outdoor terraces—was considered individually, ensuring both aesthetic harmony and plant health.
The outdoor areas, including several storm-damaged sites, were rejuvenated with new planting and grounds work, restoring each location to a high standard. The refresh also included a pot upgrade across all offices, moving from traditional black to modern grey, while spike-leafed plants were replaced with round-leaf varieties to create a softer, more welcoming appearance.
Beyond standard office planting, phs Greenleaf introduced a wide variety of feature installations, including refreshed living and moss walls, herb gardens for kitchen areas, replica and live Christmas trees in each office, and a sensory garden featuring Jasminoides, Lavender, and Rosemary. In the London office auditorium, a preserved natural tree (1.8–2m) was carefully maintained to ensure it retained its lush appearance throughout the year—an emblem of the project’s commitment to long-term impact and detail.
Weekly deliveries of fresh, hypoallergenic flowers and seasonal decorative bowls for reception areas added a finishing touch, ensuring that every visitor experienced a warm and vibrant welcome.
The plant palette reflected a thoughtful mix of resilience and style. Key specimens included Howea forsteriana, Ficus robusta, Dracaena Janet Craig, Schefflera, and Monstera, complemented by trough arrangements of Chamaedorea elegans, Aglaonema, Zamioculcas, Asplenium, Boston fern, Red anthurium, Bromeliad, and Aspidistra. All plants were potted in Lechuza white troughs, Black Nax, and Anthracite Pax containers, with a top dressing of leca, black pebble, or slate to ensure a refined finish.
Through meticulous planning, creative design, and outstanding execution, phs Greenleaf successfully unified the look and feel of Pinsent Masons’ UK offices, delivering a calm, cohesive, and biophilic environment that enhances both wellbeing and brand identity—making this project a deserving Gold Leaf Award winner.
